As the premier presenter of community-based performing arts, the Academy of Music spotlight falls in equal measure on area performers and international greats. The Academy has established relationships with a stable of area art organizations that have a history presenting at the theater. Artists grace the stage to perform ballet, orchestra, opera and dramatic productions.
Pioneer Valley Ballet
The mission of Pioneer Valley Ballet is to foster an appreciation of dance on a regional level for local audiences, to give dedicated young dancers the opportunity to perform at a pre-professional level and to provide all children the opportunity to experience the joys of movement and music through the study of classical ballet. Signature Sounds Recordings was formed by Jim Olsen and Mark Thayer in 1995 to promote the burgeoning acoustic music scene in and around Northampton, MA. Since our inception, we’ve released over 50 albums of singer-songwriter, Americana and modern folk music. Signature Sounds Recordings are distributed exclusively in the U.S. by E1 Entertainment. Our recordings are also available in Canada through True North Records and throughout the UK and Europe by Continental Record Services (CRS). The Signature Sounds Recording Studio was founded in 1982 by Mark Thayer. It has become the studio of choice for many performers in the acoustic and jazz music worlds.
Valley Light Opera
The Valley Light Opera, Inc., based in Amherst, is a nonprofit Massachusetts corporation founded in 1975 by a group of Gilbert and Sullivan devotees. The VLO promotes broad participation and produces fine entertainment. We present a fully staged opera in the fall of each year, and less formal productions in the late winter or early spring. Over the years, the Valley Light Opera has produced all fourteen of the G&S operas as well as Cox and Box, The Zoo, The Rose of Persia, The Chieftain, The Emerald Isle, The Beauty Stone, and Sullivan’s oratorio The Prodigal Son. In addition, VLO has performed Rudolf Friml’s The Vagabond King, Franz Lehár’s The Merry Widow, Jacques Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, John Philip Sousa’s El Capitan, and Warren Martin’s The True Story of Cinderella. Old Deerfield Productions (now Eggtooth) is a non-profit theater company with the mission of creating, presenting, and producing high quality theater arts that engage, challenge, and entertain audiences. ODP has a ten-year history of commissioning new work that addresses social challenges and tells the stories of neglected women in history. Their success with The Captivation of Eunice Williams that premiered in 2004 and toured Europe and Canada and was performed in co-operation with Glimmerglass Opera and at the Smithsonian Institution was repeated with a Mass Humanities funded commission, TRUTH, an opera about the life of Sojourner Truth. Truth was seen by more than 2400 audience members, selections broadcast on WGBY, performed at the New York International Fringe Festival, and accompanying education programs were enjoyed by youth throughout Western Mass. Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra
One of the oldest community orchestras in the United States, the PVS was founded to “serve the Pioneer Valley through music in three ways: by performing symphonic and choral music; by providing members of the community the opportunity to participate in making music; and through musical education, particularly by introducing young children to live orchestral music.” Their Website
Starlight’s Youth Theatre
Starlight’s Youth Theatre is a non-profit community theater group dedicated solely to the youth of the Pioneer Valley with a mission and priority focused on the development of the child, using theatre as the tool to build self-esteem, communication and confidence. Their Website
