School Day Series

October 14, 2011 African Children’s Choir

Through song, dance, drumming and story, the African Children’s Choir has entertained audiences across the world with a pan-African musical tradition that includes everything from gospel favorites to traditional courtship dances. The Choir has empowered these young singers, ages 7-11, to break the cycle of poverty, and continues to raise funds to support education in Africa. We hope you’ll join us for what promises to be a special and inspiring performance, appropriate for grades K-8.

March 6, 2012 The Giver

The Academy of Music will present The American Place Theatre’s Literature to Life stage presentation of The Giver by Lois Lowry, adapted and directed by Elise Thoron. This Literature to Life® Award winner marks the first young adult novel on the Literature to Life roster.  The piece features sixty minutes of performance focusing on the relationship between the young Jonas and his mentor, The Giver.  As Jonas trains to become the Receiver of Memories, the buried truth about the world that he was born into becomes hauntingly clear to both Jonas and the audience. Surrounded by a pre and post show interactive discussion, the audience will explore themes including Individuality, Ethics and Social Constructs. Appropriate for grades 5-9.
